Having Fun In The Mud

For most drivers, versatility in their vehicles is a prerequisite. This is because in the life of a car, one will be faced with differing and sometimes daunting driving conditions. Top on this list is mud driving.

While there are several safety precautions that one has to take in such a situation, that doesn’t mean it has to be a dreary, boring affair.

Start With The Right Tire

One of the biggest determinants of how your experience in the mud will be is the type of tires fitted on your vehicle. As a general rule, one needs to look at purpose-built mud terrain, preferably from a trusted brand. A good example of this would be the Defender from Michelin.

There are a number of factors that make this tire the ultimate mud driving choice. For one, it has the added adaptability of being suitable for both dry and wet conditions. This means that you are able to get out of a sticky situation, while being fairly confident on freeway drives.

There Is Safety In Numbers

Contrary to other vehicle-related past times, mud driving is an activity that is best done in the company of other drivers. This is mainly for two reasons. Firstly, there is a heightened level of risk when it comes to sloughing through muddy terrains. This can be anything from getting stuck in a bog to grievous injury in the event of an accident.

In addition to that, by driving in a group, you have the advantage of tracing the tracks of others. Driving in the mud is fraught with hidden obstacles such as jutting rock-faces. As such following others who’d have successful gone through a patch can be quite beneficial.

Speed To Grip Ratio

While this may not be an official metric, it gives a full description of one of the main things to look out for when tackling mud . It goes without saying that road dynamics differ hugely between dry and muddy surfaces. While grip is a function

of tread quality and a vehicle’s speed, the story is slightly different in mud driving.

Usually, it is critical to travel at a speed that allows the tire’s sipes to effectively bite into the mud. High speeds give the tire’s tread less time to interact with the muddy surface.

As  result, the car may begin to skid. Corrective action at this stage, such as braking or turning, can actually yield worse results, lengthening the skid.

Failing To Prepare Is Preparing To Not Have Fun

When thinking of having fun words like plan and prepare seldom come to mind. However, when it comes to taking your truck for some fun in the mud this is far from the truth. In order to fully enjoy mud driving, there is a checklist that one has to go through.

First and foremost, you need to check that all your tires are suitable for the mud and are not overly inflated.  In addition to that, it is critical to ensure that you are conversant with the trail.

There is no room for nasty surprises, as such you need to check mud depth beforehand. This will give you a fair idea of where you need to engage four wheel drive and spots to avoid altogether.

Due Diligence And Fun Go Hand In Hand

In all it is clear to see that to ensure an enjoyable experience when mud driving, one has to take a careful approach. This doesn’t however mean the whole thing has to be boring. Once all due diligence has been following, let the truck rip and enjoy the great outdoors.

Best Used Trucks For Off-roading

When it comes to extreme sports, few activities come close to off road trucking. From the crunch of sand underfoot, to the rolling hills and rock surface, this is the ultimate in adventure. As with most things, in order to get the most out of it, one has to have the right equipment.

To help make your next off road adventure a success, we are going to run down the best trucks for off road driving. Please note that these vehicles are not ranked in any order

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Hard Rock Edition

In the off-road driving scene, even novices will be familiar with the Jeep brand. Proven over time to be a hardy and capable machine, the Jeep is definitely one of the best trucks for off road adventures.

Making its first appearance early on in 2003, this off-road marquee is a solid offer. Robust materials such as Dana 4×4 axles and an independent swaybar are just a few of the reasons this truck makes short work of grueling terrain.

Dodge Ram Power Wagon

Another renowned brand that has carved a name for itself in off road driving is Dodge. While many of their trucks get the job done, there is something about the Ram Power Wagon that is unique.

A suspension frame that takes on a coil structure keeps the truck afloat, no matter the landscape. Front and rear axles built on rock-hard steel [pun intended] prevent unnecessary surprises once you hit the rough.

Ford Raptor

While the previous two have been in the market for a lot longer, the Raptor from Ford is a comparatively new contender. This however, has not deterred the entrant. A class-leading 411 hp, 6.2 v8 engine has established the Ford Raptor in the best trucks for off road category.

To better place all this power onto the ground, the truck has a broad suspension and 35 inch purpose-built tires. The Raptor fuses a Baja – inspired theme with mainstream utilities such as a locking differential that gives the driver an edge in the dirt.

Chevrolet Colorado ZR2

While Chevvie hasn’t always taken well to off-roading, their offering in the Colorado has changed that narrative. Bringing in varied models, including special editions, has helped to increase the popularity of these trucks with an assortment of consumers. A combination of paying attention to their market and putting together a proficient off-roader, Chevrolet successfully clawed their way to the top.

Toyota Tundra TRD Pro

At this point, many a Toyota fans would have been wondering where the Tundra places on this list. And this is with good reason. The Toyota Tundra has long held its own as one of the best trucks for off road use on the market.

Topping the range is the Toyota Tundra TRD Pro. What sets this vehicle apart is the extreme attention to off-roading detail. Additions such as a skid plate, off-road suspension as well as standard off-road tires make it more than able to deliver in rough terrain. It’s even been known to easily deal with small jumps with little to no bottoming out.

Whichever truck you choose here, you can be guaranteed they won’t let you down when the tough gets going
